Residential

In 2025, Openreach will switch off the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). This means that everyone who currently relies on PSTN-based services – not just businesses but also residential customers – will need to switch to an alternative service before then.

For the residential sector – which now takes in a vast number of home-based remote workers and small businesses – the forthcoming PSTN network migration means urgent action is required.

Change is coming to the residential sector

Openreach has already stopped selling many well-known telecoms services at hundreds of exchanges across the country, as part of the ongoing PSTN network migration. But as the deadline nears, businesses and home workers who have not made the switch are now danger of being left behind. The result could be a rushed emergency switch, with the associated risk of business downtime.

The issue does not end there. In September 2023 Openreach implement Stop Sell in the UK. Customers across the whole country can no longer purchase new ISDN lines or add new features. As more and more exchanges stop selling new ISDN connections, even more businesses and residential customers will join the rush towards digital communications.

In December 2025 the PSTN network finally reaches end of life status. In other words, it will be completely switched off across the UK.

The residential sector means business

With the boom in home working and the PSTN switch-off approaching, VoIP solutions for the residential sector represent a significant opportunity for channel partners.

Thanks in part to the PSTN network migration, the move to hosted voice (VOIP) is unavoidable – but it also represents a highly beneficial upgrade, for both businesses and residential users. The benefits include reduced costs, increased productivity, more efficient ways of working, greater flexibility – and they are all available right now, to businesses and homes that choose to make the switch.
