The classroom will become a smart learning space, where devices such as beacons and sensors can be used creatively within the teaching experience. Teachers will be able to oversee students’ work progress more easily thanks to better device visibility, and the “smart school or college”.
Technology developments are constant, and with this, schools and colleges which are digitally transforming must regularly review their guidelines in order to keep up to speed. Some of the most pertinent guidelines refer to internet use, particularly around bullying and in-classroom use of mobile phones.
However, recent research from Microsoft UK shows more than half of teachers (58%) believe the current education system is failing to prepare students for a digital future.
Despite forecasts from the World Economic Forum that workers will need to be ‘agile lifelong learners’ in the workplace, students are not being set up for success. Less than half (42%) of teachers surveyed say schools are instilling the skills students will need in the world of work.
In the same research, Microsoft highlight that teachers are also not equipped to make the most of school technology investments, with just 15% feeling confident about using technology and only a third (33%) receiving hands-on training. This, coupled with time-poor schedules and disparity in teaching priorities, is holding educators back from making the most of the tools at their disposal and preparing students for the future.
The most important question to ask when implementing a new technology is if your existing infrastructure can cope with the new demands that you will be placing upon it. As mentioned in another recent report, from Cambridge International, one of the greatest challenges when implementing digital technologies in to your classrooms, is an inconsistent or slow internet connection. You could find that if all of your devices are used at once, your hardware suddenly has limited access to school resources.
WiFi connectivity should enable you to reach your goals and transform your school in to a digital hub of learning. Your staff should be able to work quickly and effectively, whilst your classrooms make the most of their new laptops, tablets and other digital technologies.
